In 2014 Bengali movies witnessed a change in terms of audiences preferences. Audiences showed more interest to the original scripts and meaningful movies rather than the big budget south indian remakes. This trend change have an efect on the career of the actors too. Here is the list of top five actors of Bengali cinema in 2014. This ranking has been made based on the actors performance and his box office success and also his contribution the success.
1.Abir Chatterjee - There is no doubt 2014 was the most successful year for Abir Chatterjee's career so far. Before this he had been seen mostly doing supporting roles or guest appearances. But this year he had five releases where he played the main lead. Among these five movies two movies "Baadshahi Angti" and "Byomkesh Fire Elo" were big hits at the box office. Coincidentally these two movies were released on the same day. Apart from that he gave his career best performance in the movie "The Royal Bengal Tiger" where he played an under confident middle class govt employee. He was too good in this role. His other two movies "Jadi Love Dile Na Prane" and "Hrid Majhare" could not do any magic at the box office but his performance was appreciated in both the movies. Apart from these lead roles he also acted brilliantly in extended cameos too in two movies "Jaatishwar" and "Chaar".
2.Parambrata Chatterjee - The beginning of 2014 was not good enough for Parambrata
Chaterjee. His first release as a main lead "Chhaya Manush" got toatly unnoticed at the box office and his supporting role in "Obhishaptto Nighty" was not good enough to get him much accolades. After that his career took a good turn with "Apur Panchali" where he got his first hit of the year as well as got good reviews too for his performance.Then he surprised everybody with his superb acting in a double role in "Hercules" which was followed by another good performance in "Highway". Though this two movies were not that much lucky at the ticket windows. After that Parambrata Chatterjee appeared in the biggest hit of 2014 "Chatushkone". Here he got great reviews for his extremely fantastic portrayal of an upcoming director. It was the first time he played a character with grey shades and he excelled with distinction in spite of the presence of the veteran actors around him.
3. Prosenjeet Chatterjee - Prosenjeet Chatterjee gave one of his career best performance in "Jaatishwar". Here he played a double role of two different characters which were the two different lives of a same soul.With his superb acting skills he made the two characters totally different from each other at the same time both the characters were too real and convincing. The movie got good awards , good reviews from classes as well as masses. Later Prosenjeet tried to test his luck once gain with a commercial action entertainer "Force". But this experiment did not go well and it flopped at the box office but Prosenjeet did a good job here too.
4.Dev - Commercial movie's superstar Dev had no luck at the box office in 2014.His two big budget remakes "Bindaas" and "Joddha" got very bad response and flopped but we saw
another side of Dev this year and that was his constant effort to make a place in non-commercial ,meaningful cinemas which are made for mostly urban audiences. He had started this journey with "Chader Pahar" in 2013 and in 2014 he continued that with "Bunohaas". In "Bunohaas" , Dev played the character of Amal very effortlessly.It showed given a good script and good director Dev can act well too. Probably this is the reason that he is looking forward more towards this kind of cinemas in future.
5.Jeet - Unlike Dev , Jeet is still preferring to capture the masses and the box office with his
machismo and and charisma in South Indian remakes. He had two big budget commercial releases in 2014 "Game" and "Bachchan". In both he did not try to do anything new rather both the movies were intentionally trying to en-cash his star power. "Game" was not a big hit in the long run in spite of getting a good opening but "Bachchan" proved to nbe the much needed successful film of Jeet's career. Apart from these commercial movies Jeet had tired his luck in a different kind of movie too which was "The Royal Bengal Tiger" considering the lead character was not suitable for his on screen image he had preferred to play a supporting role and he did an okay job as an actor. Along with being the actor Jeet had also co-produced all his three releases.
Apart from all these he made his singing debut too in the movie "Bachchan" with song "Priya Marie"and this song was a hit.
