Best Actress of Bengali Cinema in 2014

In 2014 there was no Tollywood heroine who can be called the uncrowned queen of Tollywood , most of the commercial film heroines who are always in the rat race were lagging behind but some unconventional actresses proved themselves with some finest performances. So here is the top five Tollywood actresses. This ranking is solely based on their performances throughout the year not on their box office success.

1.Sawastika Mukherjee - There is no doubt that Swastika is always the most

controversial heroine of Tollywood , in 2014 too she was in news mostly for wrong reasons like her linkups and break up, her infamous suicide attempt ,doing a bold topless scene but in middle of all these she excelled through with her brilliant portrayal of a depressed alcoholic Tollywood heroine in the movie "Take One". In "Take One" the character she played was very much close to her real life and she gave life to the character so comfortably that everyone will sympathies for the character. In this film she also gave a topless shot which became the talk of the town but she proved once again how bold she is and she does not care for anyone. Apart from that she also impressed us in her small but interesting role of a Bengali loving RJ in "Jaatiswar".

Her performances were appreciated in both the movies and also it got good response at the box office too.

2.Gargi Roychowdhury - Gargi Roychowdhury have hardly played a lead role before ,even she hardly get seen in Bengali movies but in 2014 she appeared in three movies which were "Raamdhanu", "Bunohaans" and "Khaad".In "Raamdhanu" she played the lead role for first time in her career and impressed us with her brilliant acting.Here she played the role of a young mother who is facing a lot of problems to get her son admitted to a good school. She looked very convincing with her look and body language. Then she appeared in a short yet impressive role of a sex worker in "Bunohaans".Finally she played a successful Bengali movie actress in "Khaad". Here too she managed to left her impression in the middle of a dozen of actors. All her movies were successful at the box office too.

3.Aparna Sen - Aparna Sen is not a regular heroine anymore rather she is an established filmmaker now, but thanks to director Srijit Mukherjee's unconventional script that we get the opportunity to watch Aparna Sen in front of camera in the movie "Chatushkone". Aparna Sen played the role of a female director who was an actress once, this character was quite similar with her real life.In this film Aparna Sen proved that age is no barrier for a good performer , provided a good character.

4.Roopa Ganguly - Another unconventional actress who is not in the rat race of the commercial film heroines , Roopa Ganguly played the lead role in two movies in 2014. In both the movies she played her character with near perfection. In "Punascha" she played a middle aged woman opposite the veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee and proved herself. In the other movie "Nayanchapar Din Ratri" she played a maid and she was excellent in the role.Her make up , costume and body language were too much realistic and convincing. None of the movies got good business but it does not matter as the movies were appreciated by its target audiences as well as Roopa's performance was also appreciated.

5.Mimi Chakraborty - Mimi Chakraborty is surely the future of Bengali movies , from her

debut this girl is balancing her career well choosing good roles. She has never played just a regular commercial film heroine who has nothing to do apart from shaking a leg with the hero in songs. In 2014 too she acted in four movies and in every movie she had an important role. In her first release "Bangali Babu English Mem" she did a good job as the modern woman who goes to study abroad. Then in "Galpo Holeo Satyi" she had a small role but she left her mark in the small role. In "Yoddha" she played double role of an ancient time's princess and a modern day young girl. She played both the roles with confidence. In her last release for the year "Khaad", she played a supporting role as a young married girl in her honeymoon. She made her presence felt in the middle of the ensemble cast.

Best Actors of Bengali Cinema in 2014

In 2014 Bengali movies witnessed a change in terms of audiences preferences. Audiences showed more interest to the original scripts and meaningful movies rather than the big budget south indian remakes. This trend change have an efect on the career of the actors too. Here is the list of top five actors of Bengali cinema in 2014. This ranking has been made based on the actors performance and his box office success and also his contribution the success.

1.Abir Chatterjee - There is no doubt 2014 was the most successful year for Abir Chatterjee's career so far. Before this he had been seen mostly doing supporting roles or guest appearances. But this year he had five releases where he played the main lead. Among these five movies two movies "Baadshahi Angti" and "Byomkesh Fire Elo" were big hits at the box office. Coincidentally these two movies were released on the same day. Apart from that he gave his career best performance in the movie "The Royal Bengal Tiger" where he played an under confident middle class govt employee. He was too good in this role. His other two movies "Jadi Love Dile Na Prane" and "Hrid Majhare" could not do any magic at the box office but his performance was appreciated in both the movies. Apart from these lead roles he also acted brilliantly in extended cameos too in two movies "Jaatishwar" and "Chaar".

2.Parambrata Chatterjee - The beginning of 2014 was not good enough for Parambrata

Chaterjee. His first release  as a main lead "Chhaya Manush" got toatly unnoticed at the box office and his supporting role in "Obhishaptto Nighty" was not good enough to get him much accolades. After that his career took a good turn with "Apur Panchali" where he got his first hit of the year as well as got good reviews too for his performance.Then he surprised everybody with his superb acting in a double role in "Hercules" which was followed by another good performance in "Highway". Though this two movies were not that much lucky at the ticket windows. After that Parambrata Chatterjee appeared in the biggest hit of 2014 "Chatushkone". Here he got great reviews for his extremely fantastic portrayal of an upcoming director. It was the first time he played a character with grey shades and he excelled with distinction in spite of the presence of the veteran actors around him.

3. Prosenjeet Chatterjee - Prosenjeet Chatterjee gave one of his career best performance in "Jaatishwar". Here he played a double role of two different characters which were the two different lives of a same soul.With his superb acting skills he made the two characters totally different from each other at the same time both the characters were too real and convincing. The movie got good awards , good reviews from classes as well as masses. Later Prosenjeet tried to test his luck once gain with a commercial action entertainer "Force". But this experiment did not go well and it flopped at the box office but Prosenjeet did a good job here too.

4.Dev - Commercial movie's superstar Dev had no luck at the box office in 2014.His two big budget remakes "Bindaas" and "Joddha" got very bad response and flopped but we saw

another side of Dev this year and that was his constant effort to make a place in non-commercial ,meaningful cinemas which are made for mostly urban audiences. He had started this journey with "Chader Pahar" in 2013 and in 2014 he continued that with "Bunohaas". In "Bunohaas" , Dev played the character of Amal very effortlessly.It showed given a good script and good director Dev can act well too. Probably this is the reason that he is looking forward more towards this kind of cinemas in future.

5.Jeet - Unlike Dev , Jeet is still preferring to capture the masses and the box office with his

machismo and and charisma in South Indian remakes. He had two big budget commercial releases in 2014 "Game" and "Bachchan". In both he did not try to do anything new rather both the movies were intentionally trying to en-cash his star power. "Game" was not a big hit in the long run in spite of getting a good opening but "Bachchan" proved to nbe the much needed successful film of Jeet's career. Apart from these commercial movies Jeet had tired his luck in a different kind of movie too which was "The Royal Bengal Tiger" considering the lead character was not suitable for his on screen image he had preferred to play a supporting role and he did an okay job as an actor. Along with being the actor Jeet had also co-produced all his three releases.
Apart from all these he made his singing debut too in the movie "Bachchan" with song "Priya Marie"and this song was a hit.

Best Bengali movies of 2014

As we are already in the year 2015 it is the best time to look back and see how was the journey of Bengali movies in the year 2014. Like always this year too we have seen hardcore commercial movies which are mostly the remake of South Indian films at the same time some non commercial meaningful cinemas also have been made which continued to rule the heart of the urban audiences. But unlike other years in 2014 these so called multiplex oriented movies make it big to the ticket windows too and surprisingly the typical commercial entertainers failed at the box office. Some big budget south indian remakes having big superstars flopped at the box office like Arundhati, Yoddha,Game, Bindaas etc. For the same reason some trade analyst think business-wise 2014 was bad year for Bengali film industry but the good thing is that people are moving more towards some meaningful original creative films in spite of those mindless remake films and it is a positive sign for a better future for Bengali film industry.

Lets have a look at the top 10 best Bengali movies of 2014. This movies has not been selected as per their box office performance rather those have been picked up for its good quality and the power to connect with audiences. The order has been maintained as per the movies' release dates.

Jaatishwar

With "Jaatishwar" director Srijit Mukherjee told the story of Antony Firingee with an interesting twist of reincarnation. This was his first movie outside Venkatesh Films. As a result the marketing was little low in comparison to Srijit's earlier movies so its opening was not that huge at the box office. Later its collection grows with the word of mouth publicity.After watching the film people realizes that this is Srijit Mukherjee's best film till date. The performances by Prosenjeet Chatterjee and Jishu Sengupta was superb. Also there was a brilliant supporting cast. Another highlight of the film was the soulful music by Kabir Suman. Later the film got 4 national awards too which also worked in favor of the film. 
Apart from the actors on screen this movie had a super talented team behind the camera too including Director Srijit Mukherjee, Cinematographer Soumik Halder, Make up artiste Vikram Gaikwad etc.



Chirodini Tumi Je Amar 2

This Venkatesh films production was directed by Soumik Chatterjee. It was a tragic love story featuring a group of talented new comers.The story had an emotional connect with the audiences and it was executed very well by the young brigade of actors like Arjun Chakraborty, Urmila Mahanto, Bihu Mukherjee, Riddhi Sen and Ena Saha. As a result it became successful at the box office and made a good enough money considering it was a film of new comers. The soulful music by jeet Ganguly was a add on.

Apur Panchali

"Apur Panchali" was yet another good film from Venkatesh films production house. Master storyteller Kaushik Ganguly came with yet another unconventional story. The story was about the life of Subir Banerjee,the child actor of "Paather Panchali". The screenplay was very good and it blended the story of the reel and real life of Apu very well. There were some fantastic acting by Parambrata Chatterjee, Ardhendu Banerjee, Parno Mitra and Gaurav Chakraborty. The music by Indradip  Dasgupta was also a big hit. The cinematography was also very nice which gave an authentic feel.The film got lots of appreciation from critics and at festivals as well. It also got a good response at the box office too.



Ramdhanu

Director duo Shiboprosad and Nandita came with yet another movie based on the story by Suchitra Bhattacharya. This time it was a story about the problems parents have to face to admit their kids in a reputed school. Just like their earlier films this time also it had no big stars rather the story was the main hero. The story had a good mix of comedy and emotion which worked very well with the audiences. The acting by Shiboprasad Mukherjee and Gargi Roychoudhury was brilliant. This movie take a slow start at the box office but finally wins the race by winning audiences as well as critics's hearts.


Galpo Holeo Satyi

The only south Indian remake in this list is "Galpo Holeo Satyi". This was again from Venkatesh films. With this south remake director Birsha Dashgupta proved that there are some other good south Indian movies too apart from those mindless action films and those good movies can be remade too. Even if it was a remake the story had been adapted very well for Bengali audiences and the twist in the climax was very interesting. It was a story of Pizza delivery boy who got stuck in a haunted house while going to deliver pizza. As a leading man Soham Chakraborty was very good. Also Mimi Chakraborty had a short and sweet role to play. The cinematography by Shubhankar Bhar was too good specially the one hour portion where the hero was stuck in the haunted house. The movie was not a big hit at the box office but it had done a decent business comparing its budget.

Bunohaans

In 2013 commercial movies superstar Dev had entered in the zone of non-commercial cinema with "Chander Pahar" and in 2014 he took a step forward with Anirudhha Roychowdhury directed "Bunohaans". It was based on the novel by the same name written by Samresh Majumdar. It is a story of Amal an innocent guy who got trapped into the dirty world of crime. The main highlight of the film was the direction by Aniriudhha Roychowdhury and the acting by Dev. Apart from that it has brilliant supporting cast leaded by Sudipta Chakraborty , Sohag Sen, Shrabanti and Gargi Roychowdhury. The music by Shantanu Moitra was very much soulful and melodious. This movie was released in a long holiday weekend and did a good business at the ticket windows.

Chatushkone

Probably the best thing happened in 2014 was it had two releases of Srijit Mukherjee in the same year for the first time.After the success of "Jaatishwar", Srijit came back once again during the Puja season with "Chatushkone". It had a very interesting and unconventional story line. It was a thriller having four directors as the main character who are on a journey to work on a film together for four different short stories having a common theme of death. The casting of the film was also very interesting having Aparna Sen, Chirnjeet Chatterjee, Gautam Ghosh and Parambrata Chatterjee and the interesting thing about the script was the four leading character's on screen life had much similarities with the career of the actors playing those characters. Every actor had done superb acting. Anupam Roy's music was a big hit specially the song "Basanto eshe gechhe". The film got a bumper response at the box office and became the biggest hit of the year.

Khaad

Just like Srijit Mukherjee , Kaushik Ganguly too had two releases in 2014. His second offering was "Khaad" , again a Venkatesh films production. The story was about the journey of a group of around  a dozen people who met with  a road accident. On an inner note thsi was a journey of human souls from this real world to surrealistic world. The actors had been chosen very well from a wide range of actors to play the different characters. All the actors did exceptionally well but some them stand out were Kaushik Ganguly(himsekf as an actor too), Kamaleshwar Mukherjee, Gargi Roychowdhury,Mimi Chakraborty and Lily Chakraborty. The music by Indradeep Dashgupta was very soulful and it was used very well in the movie too.

Byomkesh Fire Elo

In 2014 during Christmas season a rare thing happened, on a same day there were two releases of a same actor in one he was playing Feluda and in the other the same actor was playing Byomkesh Bakshi. The actor here in question is none other than Abir Chatterjee. "Byomkesh Fire Elo" was his last and the best film as Byomkesh and it is the best Byomkesh film from director Anjan Dutta too. He had adapted the story "Benisnghar" by Saradindu very well as a movie script. The screenplay was engaging with a bunch of interesting characters around. All the actors did  a good job but to mention a few who were very good were Kaushik Sen, Rahul Mukherjee and Biswajit Chakraborty.The film had a slow start specially because of its direct competition with the Feluda movie but in the long run it win the competition in both quality as well as box office success.

Badshahi Angti

2014's last Venkatesh Films release "Badshahi Angti" was directed by Sandip Ray. Director Sandip Ray who had earlier directed Feluda films taking Sabyasachi Chakraborty in the title role gave a fresh start to his on going Feluda series with new pair of actors for Feluda and Topshe. Abir Chatterjee fits very well in the shoes of Feluda. With this the story also took a fresh start with first novel of the Feluda series. With this movie Sandip Ray had also made Feluda much more contemporary which will connect more with today's generation. Apart from Abir the other actor who was too good was Paran Bandopadhyay , the rest of the cast was also okay. This movie also captured the beautiful city of Lucknow and Haridwar very well. In the box office it had good opening which gave it a good overall collection and make it a hit.

Review of Bengali movie "Byomkesh Fire Elo"

Director Anjan Dutta and actor Abir Chatterjee are back with the third installment of their Byomkesh series and it will not be wrong to call it the best from the duo. This time the story which has been adapted is "Benisanghar".

The story revolves around the murder of a very rich and well established man Benimadhab (Bishwajit Chakraborty)  and his faithful bodyguard Meghraj. Benimadhab's family has a lot of mysterious characters like his theater actor son , his daughter-in-law , his daughter , his son-in-law Gangadhar (Kaushik Sen) and his grand son and grand daughters. There are his two nephews too who live with him Sanat(Rahul Mukherjee) and Nikhil. All these characters have more or less motive to kill Benimadhab as no one have a good relationship with him and also he was about to change his will which will affect the relatives financially too. Byomkesh does his investigation and not only he found the murderer rather he discovers some other dark secrets of the family too at the end.

The original story has been tweaked a bit using creative liberties which may not appeal to

the die hard Sardindu Fans but if you take it as a movie's screenplay then it is really well written. The way the plot has been created in the beginning , the way all the characters have been introduced in the first half keeps the drama engaging. Only few things which could have been avoided or at least reduced is the domestic fight between Byomkesh and Satyabati (Ushashi). Its not like that a married woman have to always fight with her husband. Also there is one portion where Byomkesh tries to give lecture on social life beyond politics to the character of Makranda (Shubhro) which does not sync with the story as it has nothing to do with the main story rather it tries to show Byomkesh in a different light apart from an investigator but do we need it? There are also some portions added to tell why Ajit(Shaswata Chatterjee) is still with Byomkesh's family but we really don't need all this melodrama in the murder mystery.But in spite of this drawbacks still it never loose its grip from the audiences till the end as because of the characters are so interesting and their different equation with Byomkesh has been portrayed very well.

As a director Anjan Dutta has done superb job whether it is recreating the old age charm of old Calcutta or choosing the actors for different characters he has done all these with near perfection.It is much better from his earlier Byomkesh movies in its presentation.

Abir Chatterjee has done an excellent job as in the lead character. He has matured a lot from his first Byomkesh Bakshi movie. While watching him it can be said his body language to dialogue delivery everything is just perfect for the character. Though the bad thing is it is his last Byomkesh film and we will surely miss him as Byomkesh. If there will be new actor for next Byomkesh then there is high probability that it was last one for Shasawta Chatterjee and Ushashi too as Ajit and Satyabati. In the final installment Shaswata has nothing much to do. He has hardly 3-4 scenes in fact this time his character Ajit has not even accompanied Byomkesh during investigation. In this minimal scope Shaswata is too good as usual. Also his voice over has

been used very well to introduce the characters. Ushahsi had to play only a nagging wife all the time and she hardly have any scope to perform anything.
Among the rest of the cast it is Kaushik Sen as the born gambler and alcoholic Gangadhar who steals the show. He is absolutely brilliant. His scenes with Byomkesh are very interesting. Rahul has also done a good job as Sanat, the photographer nephew of Benimadhab. In the emotional scenes he is very good. Subhra has a lot of scope to perform as Makranda but he fails to deliver upto the mark. Locket Chatterjee has her moments but very few. Biswajit Chakraborty has performed very well in his brief appearance.
The rest of the cast have given perfect support.

Among the technical team full marks should be given to the cinematographer Indraneel Mukherjee. He has captured the whole film giving it old age charm to represent teh era of 1960. The same should be said for the art direction and costume design team who have given the perfect look for that period. Arghyakamal Mitra has done a fantastic job by balancing the pace of the film between an edgy thriller and an emotional journey of human relationship.
There is no song in the film but Neel Dutta's music has been used very well in the background.

Overall it is best Byomkesh film ever made by Anjan Dutta so go and watch it if you are a Byomkesh fan. Also you should watch it as it is the last opportunity to see Abir Chatterjee as Byomkesh Bakshi.

1. Alia Bhatt -  Yes it is quite surprising to see the little daughter of Mahesh Bhatt on top of

the charts. In spite of being the youngest Bollywood actress of current generation Alia ruled the industry in 2014. First she surprised everyone with her superb acting abilities in "Highway" where she played a young rich girl with a disturbing past. She impressed the veterans of Bollywood with her performance in the movie. Also it earned good enough money at the box office to be called an average hit. After that she gave the highest grossing movie of her career "2 States" where she played a south Indian girl with ease. Along with her acting capabilities this movie proves her abilities to conquer box office as it became a 100cr hit. Her third movie was "Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania" , it was neither performance oriented nor was a 100cr hit but it was a good entertainer and earn good money of 76cr. 
Not only as an actresses she also proved herself as a singer with her soulful singing in "Highway" and "Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania".
Apart all these Alia Bhatt made remain famous for the jokes based on her stupidity. Finally she gave an answer to the jokes with her brilliant video "Genius of the year" . This youtube video became viral later her another video "Coming Home", about girl safety. It was also a big hit on youtube. 

2.Priyanka Chopra - Priyanka Chopra had two releases in 2014. First she came as sexy bong beauty in "Gundaay". Here she a meaty role and she looked gorgeous too

in traditional Bengali sarees. Later she came in deglamorized role in "Mary Kom" where she played the title role of boxer Mary Kom and just like her character she gave power packed performance with her acting. Both the movies gave her good reviews as well as good box office collection of around 70cr each. Specially "Mary Kom" was a big hit considering its budget. After "Fashion" once again Priyanka hit gold in a woman oriented film.

3.Kangna Ranaut - Though Kangna Ranaut had 3 releases in 2014 but the best one was

obviously "Queen", people hardly remember her other two movies "Revolver Rani" and "Ungly". "Queen" was the journey of self discovery of a small town girl Rani and Kangana lived the life of Rani so well that it was tough to believe that anyone else would have fit in the role. There is no doubt it is best performance of her career so far. The movie does very well in the box office and became a surprise hit of the year with a collection of more than 60cr which is huge in comparison to the low budget of the film.

4.Deepika Padukone - In 2013 she was the uncrowned queen of Bollywood and she continued to rule in 2014 too. Though she has slipped by 3 positions but it is just because

her other contemporary actresses has got better written roles to showcase their talent. But if it comes to box office collection Deepika is still ruling. She gave another 200cr hit this as "Happy New Year" and her another film "Finding Fanny" also became a surprise hit with a collection of more than 30cr which was simply unbelievable from such a low key movie. In "Finding Fanny" , Deepika plays a very interesting role of a young widow and made her presence felt along with the senior actors. It was quite an experimental role for her career and she did well. In her other release "Happy New Year" she impressed everyone as a typical Bollywood heroine role of Mohini. As Mohini she shows her well toned body and dancing skills very well.She looked mesmerizing in the "Lovely" song.

5.Anushka Sharma - After almost two year Anushka Sharma made a grand comeback with "PK" the highest grossing movie ever. It not only gave Anushaka her first ever 300cr hit but also gives her a meaty role to showcase her talent that too opposite Aamir Khan. Apart from this successful film she remain in news throughout the year for her alleged link up with cricketer Virat Kohli and also she was in news and in comic trolls too for her cosmetic surgery for her lips.

6. Rani Mukerjee - First she grabbed the attention of the media for her secret wedding

with her long time boyfriend and Yashraj films head honcho Adiya Chopra. Later she made a bold and powerful comeback in bollywood with "Mardaani". In "Mardaani" we found the very old raw acting talent of Rani which was lost in some of her recent movies. This movie not only got great reviews but also it did very well at the ticket windows. In spite of being a very small budget film with no any other well known star apart from Rani it became a hit with an earning of 32cr.

7. Katrina Kaif - Giving 100cr hit is now a regular for Katrina Kaif and in 2014 too there was no exception. Katrina had only one release in 2014 and it was "Bang Bang" which made around 180cr at the box office. But just like her any other hit movie here too she had nothing much to do apart from being a eye candy in fashionable clothes. No matter how she is received by the critics but still she is the lucky mascot for successful films.


8.Shraddha Kapoor - In 2013 Shraddha made a big name for her with "Ashiqui 2" so there was very much expectation from her next movie so when she came back with "Ek

Villain" people had expected a lot from her , though she was not bad in that movie but it was not up to the mark. No matter how well her character was in the movie but this movie became the highest grosser of her career and became a 100cr hit. Later she came in another movie which was "Haider" where she had a small but well written role and this time she left an impression in spite of the presence of extremely talented senior actors. Apart from acting she made her singing debut too and sung songs in her voice in both the movies , her song "Galiyaan" from "Ek Villain" was very well received.

9. Jacqueline Fernandez - Jacqueline had became a part of many successful films earlier too but in 2014 she got the best opportunity to start opposite none other than Salman Khan in the movie "Kick". It made her debut in 200cr club. Also unlike other Salman movies here Jacqueline had a interesting role to play and she delivered a good performance within the limits of her character. Her dance performance in the song "Jumme Ki Raat" was very much appreciated.

10.Kareena Kapoor Khan - Kareena Kapoor Khan had only one release in 2014 and inthat too she very less to do. The movie was "Singham Returns" which earned around 143cr at the box office and became yet another 100cr hit in Kareena's career which was very much required at this point her career. With this film she proved even after being Mrs. Khan her acting career has not ended yet but unfortunately she did not had much screen time. We wish to see more of acting skills in future.

The actresses who flopped in 2014

Vidya Balan -  There was a time when her name was the guarantee of a good quality film but in recent past a strange thing is happening , Vidya Balan is picking up one after another disastrous movies which doesn't has good story to tell neither had a good role for her to play. In 2014 she had two releases "Shaadi Ke Side Effects" and "Bobby Jasoos". Audiences had lots of expectations from both the movies but both failed win audiences heart as well as money.

Parineeti Chopra -  Though she had given a very fresh and engaging romantic comedy "Hasee To Phasee" in 2014 but her other two movies were totally disapponting. So far she had an image that she chooses her movies very smartly but after watching here last two movies "Daawat-E-Ishq" and "Kill Dil" everyone had been surprised to know why she signed those absolutely non-sense movies.

Madhuri Dixit - She tried to relaunch her career once again in 2014 with two back to back movies "Dedh Ishqiya" and "Gulaab Gang" but in both the movies she failed to charm the audiences. Where in "Dedh Ishqiya" her acting abilities was in question in "Gulaab Gang" had a badly written role for her.
