Review of One

Director Birsa Dasgupta's #One is a stylish thriller where a continuous mind game is going on between the Hero and the Anti-Hero.

It is an official remake of a Tamil movie but it has been well adapted in Bengali environment quite well. It is a story of a cop Ronojoy Bose (Yash Dasgupta) who actually does more than just his duty as an IPS officer. He is not happy just catching the culprit rather he is more interested to go to the root level of the organized crimes. He is too sharp and intelligent with his approach. In his mission, he is accompanied by a group of three friends and a girlfriend Megha(Nusrat). On the other hand there is a genius scientist Aditya Sen(Prasenjit Chatterjee) who wants name fame and money by hook or crook. Even he is okay to sacrifice his own father for that.
Both Ronojoy and Aditya have no personal rivalry but their mission is exactly opposite which make them enemies, Ranajoy cannot allow Aditya to succeed in his destructive plans which is against the country, against humanity. The first half goes on establishing these two main protagonists and how they identify each other as the main roadblock to their mission. The second half mostly have the brain games between the two geniuses to defeat each other which lead to a predictable climax.

The main highlight of the screenplay is the strategic game between the Hero and villain and it will keep you entertained till the end. Although sometimes it is too illogical and impossible to digest but who cares for logic in this type of movies. But if you have already seen the original movie then it might not appear that much interesting to you as there is hardly any change in the concept.

Birsa Dasgupta has a stylish approach of film making which makes him different from regular bunch of remake film makers and here too he has proved it.
Yash Dasgupta has matured a lot in his second film compared to his debut in #Gangster. Also the mustache look has worked in favor of his character but still it is tough for him to stand opposite a veteran like Prasenjit Chartterjee. Prasenjit Chartterjee has made a thundering comeback to mainstream cinema and he has played a totally negative character for the first time in his career. Though acting wise it is just a sleep walking for him but he has created solid impact with the character with his style and charisma. Nusrat has hardly anything to do apart from being the eye candy. Arjun Chakraborty is just okay in his minimal scope. Supriyo Dutta has done the same old stuff that he had done in many movies but still he provides some comic relief.

The songs composed by Arindom are good but apart from the title song in opening credit the other two songs have just added length and budget of the movie without serving any purpose. Especially the romantic song picturized in the beautiful valleys of Kashmir could have been easily avoided.Although the song "Jadi Bolo" was not required at all but the way the beautiful valleys of Kashmir have been captured by cinematographer Shubhankar Bhar, it is a treat to our eyes. Not only the song, he deserves a special mention for his slick and stylish camera work for the whole film.

Overall if you like mainstream movies then #One is a good watch for you, though sometime it is over the top but still much better and interesting compared to other commercial remakes. For the lover's of Prasenjit Chatterjee and Yash Dasgupta it is a must watch.

Review of Bishorjon

#Bishorjon is a movie about basic human feelings of giving love and being loved, no matter from which religion or which country you belong to,love is an universal emotion of human being and that has been portrayed wonderfully in the simple yet powerful story telling by Kaushik Ganguly.
The story is about Padma(Jaya Ahsaan) a Hindu young widow living in the border side village of Bangladesh nearby Ichhamati river. She lives with her old ailing father in law in a small house with very little income to survive. There is a middle aged bachelor rich powerful businessman Ganesh Mandal(Kaushik Ganguly) who lives in the same village and wants to marry Padma. To impress her he tries his level best, he pays for all her domestic expenses, visits her everyday asking for if any help is required, tries to propose her for marriage almost
every time he meets her, even he tries to manipulate the local doctor to convince her for marriage, but he never uses his powers to force her for marriage. Padma does not like to take favors from Ganesh but she has no choice, but she is not ready to marry her rather she is happy to be with the memories of her late husband. There is one void in her life, she has desire to get genuine love and care. One day a storm comes in her rather stagnant life when she finds an injured Indian Muslim guy Nasir(Abir Chatterjee) in half conscious state on the banks of Ichhamati. She not only rescued him from the border security forces rather she gives him shelter to her own house as a guest. But as it is not acceptable in society that a widow giving shelter to a stranger young man so she gives him a fake identity of her cousin brother Subhas Das. She starts getting attached to Nasir with every passing day, she starts feeling the gap of her husband in her mind with Nasir by giving him her husband’s clothes and cigarettes, though she knows Nasir is not here to stay forever, he has a family and a girlfriend waiting for him in India still she cannot control her feelings. But for a helpless widow it is not so easy to hide an Indian immigrant that too in a border side village also Ganesh has an eagle’s eye on her every movement. So how Nasir will get back to his own country, will he be able to understand the feelings of Padma, and what will happen to Ganesh all these answers are there in the climax with a twist.

The story and screenplay penned by Ganguly himself is fresh and have emotional moments to connect with audiences. The best thing about the story is its simplicity; here all the characters and their feelings are real. The good thing about the screenplay is, it never wastes time for introducing the characters rather one will get to know the background of the central characters by their conversation about their past life. Also another good thing is it breaks all the clichés about religious preferences in India and Bangladesh, here the person representing India is a Muslim and the lead characters from Bangladesh are Hindu who can celebrate Hindu festivals freely there. In the story there are two parallel love stories and both are mostly one sided but with totally different flavours, where Ganesh’s love for Padma is very loud and vocal on the other side Padma’s feelings for Nasir is silent and painful. The prelude to the climax is a scene that you will remember for long time and it will bring tears in your eyes.

As a director Kaushik Ganguly is brilliant to portray an emotional story with real feelings. In every frame he has created a magic with totally perfect detailing. There is no doubt it is one of his best work till date. With his master class direction he has made all his characters and surroundings so real that you can feel yourself present in that world while watching them on screen.

Among the actors Jaya Ahsaan is in top form, she has given many good and versatile performances in recent Bengali movies but it is her career best performance so far, she is the back bone of the story. Her body language, her painful expression through her eyes and above all her dialogue delivery in perfect Bangladeshi dialect is too good. She has got a big opportunity to showcase her talent in the central character and she has done full justice to it. It will be remembered one of carer best performance in her lifetime. Kaushik Ganguly as Ganesh has the meatiest role among all, he is comic, he is emotional, he is funny, he is jealous and he is little menace too sometime and with every emotion he will surprise you. His dialogues in perfect Bangladeshi dialect are unbelievable as it is not so easy for him being a resident of India. Once again he will confuse you whether he is better as an actor or as a director as he is just perfect in both of these. Among the three leads Abir Chatterjee looks comparatively weaker with his performance, though he tries his best to make Nasir as real as possible but it is not so easy to act opposite two extremely talented actors. Still he has managed to leave impression. Among the others both Lama and Arun Guhathakurta are in good form.

When the story is so engrossing one hardly notices about the technical details but it is the perfection of the technical team which has made the backdrop so realistic. Special mention should be given to Churni Ganguly for the makeup and costume supervision and production designer Gautam Basu for making the background and characters looking so authentic. Cinematography by Souvik Basu is of first rate. Background music by Indradip Dashgupta is good.

There is no lip sync song but music is the soul of this film. The folk songs sung and composed by Late Kalika Prasad goes very well with the narrative. The song that stands tall is “Bandhu Tor Laiga Re”, this will remain in your mind for long time.

Overall #Bishorjon is a well made movie with wonderful team work from the cast and crew. If you like to watch good content based movies then you should not miss it.

Update of Bengali movies in the 1st quarter of 2017

For Bengali movies the first quarter is always the weakest one as there is no festive season so normally no big movie releases during this time. The first quarter mostly have to survive with last year's Christmas release. That happened in 2017 also when last year's #ByomkeshPawrbo continued doing good business till January. In addition to that there was surprise big hit #BibahoDiaries.

Let's look back at this quarter and have month wise recap.

January

The month of January had two surprises with two big releases #TheBongsAgain and #BibahoDiaries. Both the movies performed exactly opposite to the expectations.

#TheBongConnection
Considering the recent trend for successful urban cinema people had high hopes with #TheBongsAgain specially as it was the sequel to much acclaimed #TheBongConnection, but it was not able to live up to those expectations. Though it has good performances by the two leading ladies Parno Mittra and Neha Panda, good music by Need Dutta and some superb foreign location but the thing which was missing was a proper story which can recreate the nostalgia of the bongs living abroad. As a result the movie could not connect with the audiences and could not match with standards set by its prequel.

#BibahoDiaries

#BibahoDiaries was a light hearted comedy about the post marriage side effects. This had not been promoted that well and it was more in news for wrong reasons as some production house had claimed director Mainak Bhaumik has remade their unreleased movie with new cast. It had been released in a smaller scale, moreover some theaters took off the shows because of two big Bollywood releases. But in spite of all these factors playing against it ,the movie shine out like a star with its strong ability to connect with the audiences. There was no doubt the main highlight of the film was the extremely humorous dialogues written by Saurav Paloudhi. Also the lead pair of Rittwick Chakraborty and Sohini Sarkar were too good with their performance. The movie got such a huge response that theater owners started increasing showtimes since third week. This movie proved the power of good word of mouth publicity. It kept doing fantastic business till the end of the quarter completing 75 successful days at theaters. Thus it became the first big hit of this year.

February

#TomakeChai
The month of February started with Saraswati Puja and for the first time Shree Venkatesh
Films tried to make it a festive holiday for movies considering it as Bengali's Valentine's day. On this occasion they released their first film of this year #TomakeChai , a love story featuring young romantic couple Bonny Sengupta and Kaushani Mukherjee. But sadly the real life couple could not create that magic in their reel life romance.

#Devi

It was followed by Paoli Dam's #Devi , a never seen before adaptation of the classic novel "Devdas". Here the lead protagonist has been changed to a female who goes through heart break followed by alcohol and drug addiction. This twisted tale got much recognition since it's poster launch and trailer release but sadly the film did not receive the same love from cinegoers. Although the performances of Paoli Dam and Shataf Figar were appreciated.

March
The month of March had two significant releases #Asamapta and #MandobasarGalpo.

#Asamapta
#Asamapta was a story about complex human relationships set in the backdrop of a hill town. This Suman Mukhopadhyay directed film had some brilliant performances from actors like Bratya Basu, Swastika Mukherjee, Rittwick Chakraborty. It was liked by a small section of audiences but mostly people kept themselves away from this film mostly because of the slow narrative.

#MandobasarGalpo

#MandobasarGalpo was psychological thriller about obsessed lovers but it was bit slow paced to qualify as a thriller. Still it get thumbs for the surprising twist towards the climax. Also people liked the performances of Paoli Dam and Parambrata Chatterjee.

Overall the only big highlight of the first quarter was #BibahoDiaries other than that most of the films failed to win hearts. Now we all are looking forward to the second quarter which has some truly big movies to look out for like the Poila Boishakh releases #Bishorjon and #One followed by #DurgaSohay and #Posto, then there will be Eid releases #Chaamp and #Boss2.

Update of Bollywood in Q1 2017

First quarter of 2017 was quite good with four 100cr movies, though all these were big hyped movies with big stars, there were no small movies which get huge returns at the ticket windows.Let's do a quick recap of Q1 2017.

January

The beginning of the month was not that good. The successful pair of #Ashiqui2, Aditya Roy
Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor came together for another love story #OkJaanu which flopped
badly. Then came the two biggies of the month during the long weekend of Republic day holiday. It was the biggest clash of the year so far when Shahrukh Khan's #Raees and Hrithik Krishna's #Kaabil released on same day. Both the movies got good opening but because of Shahrukh Khan's presence #Raees got better opening and performed better in first two weeks. But from third week #Kaabil took a lead , though after one week collection kept dropping for both the movie. On a whole both the movies entered in 100cr club, total lifetime collection of #Raees was around 139cr and for #Kaabil it was 126cr. Considering the investments #Kaabil was in more profit. Both Shahrukh and Hrithik got the much needed hit for their career but once again it is proved they are still not ready to compete for 200 or 300 CR clubs.

February
The month of February had one big hit and one big flop. While Akshay Kumar's #JollyLLB
turned out to be a major hit on the other hand Vishal Bhardwaj's Magnum opus #Rangoon failed to impress the audiences. #JollyLLB once again proved Akshay Kumar's stardom with an opening weekend collection of 50crr and total lifetime collection of around 116 cr. It was Akshay Kumar's fourth consecutive 100cr hit. Although the loyal fans of the franchise were quite unhappy with sequel as it was not up to the mark compared to the first part. #Rangoon got rave reviews for the brilliant performance of the three leads and also for the authentic representation of the period of Second World War but what was lacking was a convincing story line. Apart from these two there was another small movie #TheGhaziAttack which was based on a real historical war between India and Pakistan. This movie was appreciated very much by both critics and audiences.

March
The month of March was almost dedicated to Girl power when so many movies released
with strong female characters in lead like #Phillauri, #NaamShabana, #AnaarkaliOfAarah, #Poorna. Even this month's biggest hit #BadrinathKiDulhania tried to deliver the message of gender equality in disguise of rom-com. This movie released during the holiday season of holi plus it has the charming lead pair of Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt plus the foot tapping music, all these factors made it an instant favorite among the crowd. As a result it entered easily in 100cr club with a lifetime collection of around 114cr. Among the other movies there was Anushka Sharma's periodic piece #Phillauri and Rajkumar Rao's survival drama #Trapped both were small budget movies with fresh subject and powerful performance. But the movies could not perform at the box office.

Overall the first quarter of 2017 was okay with few good hits but still the wait for big blockbuster is there which may be complete in the next quarter with Salman Khan's Eid release #Tubelight.

Review of Mandobasar Galpo

As the name itself suggests #MandobasarGalplo is not like any regular love story rather it is about the dark side of love when love becomes obsession. It is a psychological thriller dealing with the complexity of obsessive lovers.

The story starts with Ahana (Paoli Dam) who is a renowned film director but she is going through a bad phase in her personal life as she is going through a mental trauma. She was in a relationship with a musician Ritwick (Kaushik Sen) who died accidentally just two days before their marriage. Ahana broke down completely after this incident and even she needed therapy from her psychiatrist friend Sayantan (Parambrata Chatterjee). Ahana has almost lost interest in everything but Sayantan insists her to go back to movie making to divert her mind. She starts her new film and while finding a new lead she finds a guy Rick (Indrashish Roy) who is also a musician and have similar habits like Ritwick. This similarities brings Ahana closer to Rick and she starts feeling possessive towards Rick considering him as a replacement of Ritwick. But her attachment toward her movie's leading man start impacting the film as well as the life of all the people around Ahana and her film. Finally towards the end, there comes a surprising twist which changes the equation of all the relationship.

The story is fresh for Bengali movies but the screenplay is not that tight as it must be to be an engaging thriller. In first half most of the time has been wasted to introduce the characters. The main suspense starts building towards the end and the big twist comes too late just before the climax. Just before the climax lots of things happened suddenly and it was too much to digest at one go. Another bad thing is even after revealing all the secrets lots of questions remains unanswered about the main protagonist as the whole focus shifts to some other character who was mostly ignored for the rest of the movie.
As director Tathagata Banerjee has chosen good actors but he looks immature to handle such complex subject. His portrayal of mentally depressed patients is too cliche and after one point it starts looking repetitive.

Paoli Dam is very good actress and she has tried her best to show the mental instability of Ahana though in some portions it looks like a continuation of her character from #Zulfiqar but still she has managed quite well with the mood swings of the character. Parambrata Chatterjee is very natural and have underplayed the character very well, we wish he would have got more screentime. Indrashish Roy looks a misfit in his character of a musician and actor. He looks overweight to be a actor and also in the scenes where he have to play guitar as a trained musician he looks under rehearsed. Kaushik Send is good in an extended cameo.
In the crowd of the veterans young talents Anindya Chartterjee and Dipanwita have left impression in significant roles.

Ashok Bhadra's music is okay but considering the story revolves around two musicians there could have been better scope for music which is not there.

Overall it is a good attempt to try a fresh and complex subject but it could not live up to the expectations. Still this can be watched once for the good performances of the lead actors.
